Volunteers are the [heartbeat] of our organization. We literally could not do what we do to the magnitude in which we do it, without faithful and dedicated volunteers.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Waste Not Want Not! We rely heavily on volunteers who can commit to supporting our mission at least once a week. However, we have many opportunities and times that work with many schedules.
Waste Not Want Not is located in Clay County, just south of Jacksonville, Florida, with 250 volunteers who together donate over 450 hours each week to rescue and distribute food to our hungry neighbors. It is their willingness to help that allows Waste Not Want Not to serve thousands of people in 14 counties in Northeast Florida.
Waste Not volunteers come in all ages and stages. Although most of our volunteers are newly-retired and more-senior seniors, we are happy to welcome students working towards scholarships, individuals making good on a bad decision by providing court-ordered community service, adults with differing abilities, families volunteering together, and corporations looking for ways to give back. All are critical to the success of our mission!
Volunteer opportunities include:
Food Distributors prepare orders for our food distribution partners from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday (hours vary on Sunday).
Food Rescuers drive own vehicle to a donating business to rescue food and deliver it to our facility, these opportunities take between one to three hours. We rescue food every day of the week usually in the morning. We will work to accommodate your schedule.
Truck Drivers drive the Waste Not Want Not branded box truck (no special license needed) for larger rescues, usually early in the morning.
Special Projects volunteers use their skills and talents to help us complete one-time special projects periodically as needed.
Special Events & Community Engagement Ambassadors represent Waste Not Want Not as needed at various events in the community.
For safety reasons, youth volunteers under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. The process of becoming a Waste Not Want Not volunteer begins with completing the application below. Our volunteer director will then reach out to you to explore the best way you can give your time to help us fight hunger. All volunteers must complete volunteer orientation prior to their first shift.
